Okay, I give up. I have been trying to lure the squirrels a bit further along, where the forest is much brighter, but they refuse to oblige. They must have a very good reason for this, because usually they will just follow the peanuts and hazelnuts. There seems to be some sort of boundary they refuse to cross. So I'm back in the patch of forest they like best. It would have been good to have more sunlight, but I shouldn't really complain, because the lay-out of the area I have been for years now is pretty good. And the sun is starting to rise over the trees again. For me February to May is the best time for photographing the squirrels, because the sun is high enough to light up the forest and there are no leaves to block the sun.
When I went to see the squirrels today the feeder was gone, so I wasn't expecting any squirrels to show up. But after a long wait one female appeared. Afterwards I bought a new peanut feeder. I have had to buy quite a few over the years. Sometimes they break (due to storm or sometimes maybe pine martens or deer who want to get to the goodies) and sometimes they just disappear (probably stolen). Of course it is well worth buying a new feeder to see such lovely creatures.
